About Drover Hills

The Chickasha Golf Course, established in 1915, is a treasured feature of our community’s rich 135-year history. For 97 years, it has proudly hosted the Washita Valley Golf tournament, the oldest continuous tournament in Oklahoma.

In recent years, the course has changed ownership multiple times. Recognizing its value to the community, the City of Chickasha purchased the property in 2025 — a wise investment that protects about 70 acres of green space within the city limits. Since, the City doesn’t intend to operate the course as a golf facility, that’s where the community steps in.

The Chickasha Golf Foundation was formed to partner with the City to manage golf operations here. We have sized the opportunity and privilege to preserve a local historic treasure and create a lasting public recreation and healthy living enterprise that will serve our community for current and future generations.

NEW FOR 2026! We are delighted to announce the opening of the Orville Moody Youth Practice Facility — a dedicated space where young golfers can learn the game in a safe, fun and structured environment. This facility is already giving kids a positive outlet and an opportunity to grow both as athletes and individuals.

Orville Moody grew up in Chickasha and learned the game on this very course. Known as “Sarge,” Orville James Moody (1933-2008) was an American professional golfer who achieved remarkable success. He won the 1969 U.S. Open and served 14 years in the U.S. Army, where he oversaw Army golf courses, teaching the game and competing worldwide.

A Community Driven Proposal

A local nonprofit, the Chickasha Golf Foundation, has leased the property from the City to operate it as a public golf course. This initiative is more than just about golf—it’s about preserving a way of life and creating opportunities for future generations.

Why is this important for Chickasha?

1. Youth Development

Golf is a lifelong game—from age 8 to 88. It teaches more than just swing mechanics: it instills integrity, character, discipline, honor, and respect. Without this course, our school golf teams will not have a place to practice or play—putting those programs at risk of disappearing entirely.

2. Quality of Life

Access to recreation like golf isn’t just a perk—it’s a quality-of-life issue. Families and businesses consider amenities like this when deciding where to live or invest.

3. Economic Development

Without a public course, Chickasha becomes less competitive with other communities in attracting new residents, workers, and businesses.

4. Civic Pride and History

The Chickasha Golf Course isn’t just grass and greens—it’s a part of our shared heritage. We want to preserve and improve it for today and tomorrow.

Open for Business

Were’ open and ready to serve your family. Youth teams from a variety of schools in Grady County are now practicing in the Orville Moody Youth Practice facility.  The clubhouse is open with a comfortable event space available for private parties.  The bar is open from 3 p.m. to dusk. When visiting, please check in at the Pro Shop, review our rules of play and conduct, and dress in appropriate golf attire!

A City of Champions

Did you know Chickasha might be one of the only cities in the country that can claim both a U.S. Open Golf Champion and a U.S. Open Tennis Champion?

  • Orville Moody, born and raised in Chickasha, won the 1969 U.S. Open Golf Championship. His father was the greenskeeper at this very course.
  • Don McNeill, another Chickasha native, won the 1940 U.S. Open Tennis Singles Championship and the 1944 Doubles Title.
  • With existing tennis courts already in place—another lifetime sport—we have the rare opportunity to honor both of these champions through a revitalized recreation complex that serves all generations.

Our Vision

We’re inviting you to be part of a larger vision:

• Preserving community heritage
• Providing healthy youth programming
• Strengthening our town’s future
• Honoring two of Chickasha’s greatest athletes

The Chickasha Golf Foundation is actively seeking funding, donations, and support to make this happen. With your help, we can honor the past, serve the present, and build for the future.
